What if I have to put my hand over it to protect it from the cat, and then my fingers get some mousse on them, and I have to lick them to clean them off?
I would never pressume a move as simple as that one would make me some extra few minutes!
[On the other hand, the fact that Jesper suddenly started knocking like a mad man at Kaz's door? Yeah, she might have paid a few of the guys to play with him and let him have a big win.]
Kaz was up and standing by his window, looking out into the narrow street that soon met the building beside the Slat. The industrial area didn't leave much room for gardens and open spaces, it was packed in with bustling businesses. One reason disease and fires spread to rapidly, but also why titans of industry could rise and fall with equal speed. His dark gaze seemed to be studying something beyond what was found outside, with the cake sitting on his desk. Indeed, it was untouched. Kruge was lying in one of her favorite places, in the top shelf of Kaz's bookcase, tail lazily swinging as she studied those below her. Kaz didn't bother turning around before he said what he always did when she entered. He always seemed to know precisely who it was even before she spoke.
"Hello, Kate."
Hearing her call him horrible drew a small smirk, his usual lopsided one that carved up the left side of his mouth briefly. He turned to face her, hands in his pockets. As he was just in his office and not walking much, his cane was resting against his desk rather than in his hand. "Possessive, aren't we? It looks good on you. So what was that nonsense with Jesper?"
It's not like Kaz can't pull the unexpected. Oh no, he certainly knows how to use the surprise element to his advantage whenever he comes up with one of his plans. Hell, how many times had he kept his own crew in the dark to make sure things would go his way? Yes, he definitely nails that.
But Kate walks into exactly what she had pictured in her mind.
"Hey, I'm just stating facts here." He was hers, she was his. Rumors were starting to hit the streets. Maybe Dirtyhands had brainwashed some girl. Others claimed she was his personal guard, who also pleased him in other ways. Kate loved hearing what people came up with. Nobody guessed that Kaz was a sweet and quiet lover, that enjoyed touching her hair as they found intimacy in other ways.
"I paid some guys to let him win," she shrugged, taking off her leather jacket and dropping it on one of his chairs. "It was a good try."
"I do enjoy a good fact." A play on his genuine appreciation for harsh truths over hopeful platitudes, but also a remark on this specific fact. For all that Kaz Brekker gave off standoffish vibes and monstrous rumors, at heart he did want to belong to the ones that mattered to him. They were his in turn. It was a sense of connection that he'd deprived himself from admitting for so long, and even now he had trouble putting it into words. It was always through actions that he tried to offer his version of an IOU.
He gave a nod, now understanding the excitement Jesper had held when banging on his door. He should probably feel guilty over ignoring his best friend, it was a bit of an asshole thing to do, but he'd been deep in thought and hadn't wanted to be disturbed. He'd make it up to Jesper later. "I was thinking. He would have interrupted it." A beat. "Though that was nice of you. Even if it might give him false hope about his abilities." Kaz moved forward to settle in his chair behind his desk.
"Hey, everyone deserves a win here and there. And it's not like he isn't used to the fall after going through a good roll." Poor Jesper. And Wylan, specially, as he had to put up with a boyfriend that had an unhealthy relationship with betting.
At least, tonight those two were going to have a real good time.
Coming to Kaz's desk, Kate pushed aside some of his notebooks and sat on top of it, right next to the untouched cake. Leaning back, she rested her weight on her arms, practically arched over Dirtyhand's work. She tipped her head back, her ponytail brushing the desk. "Hey, you."
"I suppose so." It wasn't as if Kaz was opposed to rigging games. It was the only way he preferred to play, when everything was stacked in his favor. Jesper's gambling was just a sore spot for Kaz, that protective brotherly streak inside of him always ready to chastise and warn. Wylan these days was trying to steer Jesper's need for risk taking into actual investments. Still with an easy chance of losing, but more legal. Kaz blew out a sigh. "I'll make it up to him later."
The easiest way to appease Jesper, aside from filling his pockets with money, was to spend quality time with him. It was also the quickest way to hurt him when time together was rebuked. Kaz resigned himself to at least drinks if not dinner later with his friend.
He watched as Kate slid his work aside to place herself as the main focal point in his desk. Leaning back in his seat, head tipped back and upwards to study her gaze intently, he said in a low voice, "Hey. I did keep the cat away from the cake."
"It's not like he wasn't going to play tonight anyway." Because sure, their friend does have a gambling problem, but its not like he can just go cold-turkey all of a sudden on it, right? Maybe this will be a lesson. Yeah, you can win and make a respectable sum a night, but that doesn't mean that tomorrow will get better.
Unless he does genuinelly win tomorrow...
Maybe she should have thought about this and its consequences a little longer. But for now, Kate had other things to focus on.
"I see that. You did a great job at it. It looks pretty and still untouched. It would be a shame if..." Not able to hold herself back, Kate dipped a finger on the mousse, gathering some and holding it near Kaz's mouth in case he wanted to finally try it.
There was a small, crooked smile, brief but present, before Kaz leaned forward and sucked the chocolate off her finger. Then he slowly, gathering himself for a moment and with breath held, leaned over to kiss Kate. He was getting better at these small moments and touches if he planted himself and prepared for them. He let her share in the chocolate flavoring in his mouth while he also tasted hers. It was a kiss that both brought ocean waves to lap at his ankles and a kiss that provided the anchor that kept him from drowning.
Both were true at once, the only logical failing that Kaz was willing to accept.
Kaz's mouth and breath tasted like chocolate and coffee, his usual bitterness offset by the sweet treat Kate brought.
"For what you owe me," he said when they parted, lips practically brushing against hers, their new teasing way to say the loved one another.
Kate's eyes closed as she noticed Kaz lean in, the corners of her lips pulling and shaping them into a satisfied smile. This was no longer a novelty between them and yet, Kate cherished each and every kiss.
She focused on the firmness of Kaz's lips, on the softness to them too. On how he granted her entry as he had welcomed her into his heart. Kate licked carefully, exploring him as the richness of the chocolate and that hint of coffee invaded her senses.
Allowing him in, Kate's heart filled with pride over how far they've come. How natural he seems about it, having tamed part of his irrational fears in favor of what they were building together. Their kiss broke with the wet and quiet sound. His chin and nose no longer brushed her face, Kate couldn't feel his breathing caress her skin. But something of Kaz always lingered there. Like the awareness that he had stolen something and smugly held onto it.
Of course, she had given it freely.
"Not sure if that's a debt I'll ever be able to pay," she admitted playfully as she straightened up, her attention back on the dessert. This time, the finger of mousse she stole, ended in her own mouth. "How's work going?"
From picking the lock in his room to acting as his sniper, Kate was his partner in every sense of the word. In ways that Kaz hadn't fully thought would ever be realized. Their patience had paid off in them sharing an ever-growing intimate bond that took many forms, from sweetened kisses to shared showers to touching themselves in one another's presence. While Kaz still suffered from touching other people, Kate was becoming the exception to his phobia. The glittering chance that maybe someday, he could hug Jesper and playfully flick Nina.
Kaz wasn't a man who believed in hope. He trusted odds rigged in his favor. He trusted hard work. This just hadn't been a job he could do by himself, but Kate had proven willing to help. Just as he tried to support her in her own insecurities and issues.
He took off his gloves and used a finger now to swipe some of the cake, licking it off. Illogically, it tasted better on Kate's finger, but he couldn't say that, because. Well. Illogical.
"You're a 1%-er, you might," he teased her back about being able to pay. He took another fingerful and this time held it out to Kate, as usual holding his breath to anticipate the touch.
"It's going. There are three new acts at the club, I was just reviewing their contracts and background vetting. Poppy still won't sign on, but they've always been too emotional to really do business. You?"
"Yeah, you really think I might?" Scrunching up her nose, she shifted to sit a little more upright, turning as she hooked a folded leg over his desk too. "I don't know, it might take a really, long, long time. And what if we make new deals while we are at it?"
As Kaz held up a finger coated in chocolate, she didn't hesitate. Tucking a wavy lock behind her ear and holding it there, she held his gaze as she wrapped her lips around his finger. Kate took her time, sucking on it and using her tongue, swirling, licking it clean.
She was well aware that it would take a long time before they could go further than this. But it was worth the wait. If anything, she just hoped that a little teasing here and there was enough to fuel something in him even stronger than those fears.
So far, it had worked.
"Wait, you're still trying to get Poppy to sign up? That'd be awesome. I'm still not over that show Jesper and I saw. Best investment ever." It had been the price to get Poppy's help, but in all honesty a complete win-win situation. "What about the other acts? What did you bag?"

Yours is the only IOU I'll take. I make most put at least a down payment first.

But Kaz will notice someone is picking the lock. Soon enough, Kate makes her way in.]
Of course I wouldn't have you any other way. You might be horrible, but you're my horrible Crow.
