[ Ain't easy, being on the run from the law and keeping up with a super soldier and black widow. Well, the latter part comes surprisingly natural. Sam's been doing it ever since Steve Rogers decided to be a show off on Sam's morning run, and then came crashing further into Sam's life with guns and government corruption hot on his heels.

Sam's not felt this alive this he learned to fly his wings for the first time, and he's self-aware enough to realize that means any therapist would have a field day with him. Thankfully, therapy ain't exactly high on the list of recreational activities for war criminals.

It's been a few months now. Mostly all three of them, but sometimes Natasha leaves Steve and Sam to their own devices, presumably to secure them the next batch of dilapidated safe houses, cover identities, travel arrangements and so on. It leaves Sam and Steve with access to the world's saddest little shack. It's drafty and cold, and has a grand total of one bed. Not much of an issue, Steve and Sam have bunked together plenty of times. Helps with the cold. Super Soldiers seem to run warm, and Sam appreciates that.

Tragically, Natasha should really know better than to leave them to their own devices for too long, because inevitably, Sam and Steve tend to get bored, and that just means they start using Redwing to scan for old Hydra bases to take out. Perfectly reasonable downtime activities while they're supposed to lay low and not get caught. Natasha would have their hide. Sam thinks this is good for them. They've both been getting restless. Maybe they've both been sneaking glances that Sam's trying to figure out. Well, he knows what's up with his own glances. He's not so sure about Steve's glances. It's a little scary, which makes it a little exciting.

Anyway. All that to say. Fresh air, and a Hydra base within reach of wings and super soldier legs. The base is abandoned, but that doesn't mean it's ever been cleared out. Plenty of bases here in Europe just faded into obscurity with Hydra going into hiding, and it feels good to wreck their shit.

Sometimes, their shit is... dangerous. This base is a lab. Sam sneaks a glance at Steve, wonders if this is a painful reminder of Bucky on the ice in Wakanda. They have to keep hoping the princess can help him, sooner rather than later. In the meantime...

Things go wrong, of course. Not immediately - they destroy what they can, disabling power sources and so force. Except deeper in the base, they open a sealed door, and a gas wafts out and...

Sam finds himself pressed against a wall, Steve's hand covering his nose and mouth. Steve has no time to protect himself - but it makes sense. Sam's just a guy, and any toxins will have a much harder time with a super soldier's system. They have Redwing clear the room, and they start the retreat. Sam's sneaking glances for a different reason now - Steve got a good lungful of whatever that sickly sweet smelling gas was, and they have no clue if he'll be truly unaffected... ]
