A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

oo1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded:
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

Ya were? Huh, now that sounds like some interestin' stories waitin' to be told. Maybe over ramen?

[He winks, making his way towards the place he has in mind.]

Yeah okay, lots o' places in Midgar are the same, it just sounded like you've never ever seen a car before. Why'd ya leave though? Wanted to see the whole big world, or for some other reason?

Definitely over ramen.

[ He smiles gently. ]

I have seen cars just...not this many.

[ Kon pauses, thinking about Reno's question and remembers. Remembers the meeting with the elders, his brother by his side.

'You wish to see the world, we wish to keep an eye on Shinra. Let's kill two birds with one stone. Go out, explore, find a way to work your way into Shinra and ensure they never find us.'

And then they let him go. ]

Wanted to see the world.

[The walk to the ramen shop is shirt, just as promised, and while it looks like some whole in the wall run down place, the inside is still cosy enough, and the smell that fills the air is already mouth watering my delicious.

Reno quickly grabs two menus, shoving one over to Konnas soon as they sat down at a table in the back, Reno's back towards the wall so that he can see the whole (admittedly small) place from where he sits. Turk training ingrained into every fibre of his body, even if his attitude might imply something else.]

Well, Midgar isn't exactly the most beautiful place to start, but thanks to us, ya might see a few more excitin' places, dependin' on where the mission might take us.

[His eyes linger for just a moment too long on his new partner, and once again the years of training tell him that Kon isn't telling the whole truth. Not lying. But also not telling everything.
But that's fine, it's not like they don't all have their little secrets and as long as Kon isn't working against them, it's all fine. Betrayal however is something that Reno would take personal, and find himself unable to excuse.]

[ There's a small yet bright smile on Kon's face as they get to the shop, inhaling the scent of food. He eagerly takes a seat, looking over the menu, seemingly oblivious to both their surroundings and Reno's gaze. ]

That so? I think Midgar's pretty, just need to find the right places.

[ Yet he's in tune with the other man all the same. ]

Hmm, wonder if I can ask for the usual but without the meat strips. What do you usually get.

[ Kon looks up, smiling brightly. ]

Hm. Might actually depend on the place, but I don't think I've found any pretty ones so far. But if ya wanna show them to me at some point, I'll let myself be convinced of the opposite,

[He doesn't even check the menu, already knowing what he'll order.]

I'll take the miso ramen, extra spicy, with chicken katsu. But I'm sure ya can order everything without the meat, or egg. Maybe replace it with tofu.
Just gotta ask,

[He waves the waiter over once Kon seems to have made up his mind to place their order of food and drinks]

[ He thinks about one spot in particular, and nods. ]

Well, maybe when we're done here, we can go if there's nothing else asked of us.

[ Kon listens to that order, swallowing in an attempt to keep himself from drooling. ]

Might have something similar. [ And there's a small bob of his head as the waiter arrives. ] Miso ramen, no katsu or egg please. And uh...

[ He takes a closer look at the menu. ]

Reno, what's ramune?

(ooc: and my phone just ate my whole reply, grrrr!!)

Mmmhm, it's quite calm right now, so chances are good that there's nothin' t'do for us after this. Or we can always claim that it's a scouting mission, lookin' for potential new SOLDIER candidates,

[Reno's eyes widen with what could be either surprise or excitement, and he quickly nods at the waiter.]

Wait you don't know what Ramune is?
Okay, two o' those, I'll be payin' for it all by the way, but you gotta try this. If ya like sweet drinks, that is,

[The Ramune is served instantly, while the ramen still need a few more minutes to cook, and Reno pushes one of the bottles over to Kon, looking way too excited for someone who is only just about to introduce someone to a kind of soda]

Wanna try open it on ya own, first?

Well, it's in the impoverished part of town so quite possibly.

[ He shakes his head. ]

No? Should I?

[ He looks confused, the confusion remaining even as the drink is presented to him. It's a pretty normal looking bottle, no matter how many times Kon tilts it over in his hands. ]

I like sweets.

[ Okay, the wrapper is pretty easy to work off and so is the plastic cap. Except there seems to be a second one. He peers down the bottle, seeing a...marble? Cute. Kon attempts to drink, only to stop. ]

...How do you get the soda?

Ah,

[Reno isn't sure what to expect now. He does know the poorer districts quite well, and there is only one place that comes to mind, in all of the sectors, that bares at least some resemblance of beauty.
Unless of course someone counts wall market and it's variety of entertaining places.]

Then you'll love this shit,

[He watches Kon struggle with the bottle, and it's amusing every time someone tries to open a bottle for the first time.
Eventually, he pulls his own bottle close.]

Watch this,

[he takes off the plastic wrap and breaks the small opener out of the cap, showing it to Kon.
He then places it on the bottle and pushes, holding his thumb on it until the marble falls and the carbonation has calmed down]

tadaaa, that's how ya do it. It's important to keep the thumb or palm on the bottle for a moment, or else it can get messy on occasion. And I'm not talking the fun kind I'm messy.

[ Kon watches with wide eyes and nearly jumping out of his chair at the sight of the marble falling down. ]

Whoa! How does it do that?

[ He picks up the opener he set aside, repeating what Reno did. Kon is silent, just watching the carbonation before lifting his thumb and taking a sip. ]

Huh, kinda tastes like lemonade.

[ He drinks more, at least until he fully processes what Reno said, giving the other man a playful look. ]

Oh? And what's the fun kind of messy huh?

Yeah, the taste is nothing special, but the gimmick with the marble works well,
[he takes a sip of his own bottle, then lets the marble roll around in the neck.]
And that it's a bit tricky to drink, if ya don't know what to look out for.

[That reaction makes Reno chuckle, and responding with a wide grin.]

Ya know what I mean. The other kind of sticky mess that makes ya want to take a shower. But is a lot more fun than plain soda.

If they had this where I'm from, all the kids would be breaking the bottles for the marbles.

[ He tilts his bottle the wrong way, blinking when he doesn't taste any soda. ]

That's real weird.

[ Kon's next sip is interrupted by that chuckle, and Kon can't help the sly smirk playing at his lips. ]

Sometimes you have that fun in the shower, cuts down on time.

[ He really shouldn't be doing this, leaning in closer to the other man's ear. What was that phrase about enemies and closeness? ]

Although I can't think of anyone who wants to make it quick.

Yeah, that's what a lot of kids here do too. They collect the bottles from the trash to get the marbles to play ,

[Some things never change, and he assume they would be the same everywhere, no matter the region.

But there is a far more interesting topic going on, and Reno can't help it, he grins even wider, a mischievous sparkle in his eyes.]

Oh yeah, the shower definitely is a choice for that. Always depends on what time ya wanna cut down on though, right? If it's only the cleaning, then it's fine. The rest ... Well, depends on the moment, but the longer the better, yeah.

[ Kon swirls his bottle, unable to help but mirror Reno's smile. He'll say it's their bond, but perhaps it's the fact he's never met someone able to keep up with his teasing. He likes it. ]

Yeah just the cleaning. Rest is better to drag out as long as possible.

[ His voice drops to a conspiratorial whisper, leaning in. ]

Think I'd like to see how long we could drag things out. Who starts begging first.

[Reno can't deny that Kon has definitely helped to get him out of his mood from earlier, and that he is now actually quite enjoying his time out here.
But oh, that's dangerous territory, and he should know better, but ...]

Do you now? Who knows. Maybe we should try, once we're done here?

[Something dark and hungry that has nothing to do with waiting for his lunch flashes up in Reno's eyes, even as he holds Kon's gaze with a telling smirk]

Maybe we should.

[ And Kon's leaning back in his chair, returning that smirk. Inside however, he's wondering if he's gone too far this time.

'That impulsiveness is going to get you hurt one of these days.' His brother always told him.

But maybe he can have fun and turn this into something useful. ]

Could always get our ramen to-go and eat it somewhere else, maybe your place?

Didn't think you'd be that eager?

[One miscolored eyebrow lifts up in curiosity, the smirk still in place.

To be fair, he didn't expect things to escalate this quickly. Or at all, that is.

He lets his eyes wander one more time over what he can currently see of Kon, then nods his chin towards his Ramune.]

Finish your drink.

[ Is this going too fast? He's known Reno for what, a few days now? Granted, there's been a few one night stands with travelers, but this is different. ]

Well, we're bound to each other no? May as well get nice and acquainted sooner rather than later.

[ In contrast to the bulk of his kimono, Kon's more contemporary clothing give a more accurate impression of his body. Wiry and chicken legged, a runner's physique. Kon picks up the bottle and downs it like a shot. ]

Ready when you are.

["Never fuck within the company", it's what they say.
Well, whoever "they" are, they clearly don't work for Shinra, and especially not for the Turks.
When there is barely time to meet anyone else, and relationships are impossible to maintain - not that Reno was ever looking for one - people have to help each other out, right? Or at least Reno does from time to time, depending on who "needs" him, and the other way around.]

Didn't think it extended to this too, but who am I to complain?

[he grins and downs his own bottle before getting up and informing the guy at the counter that they'll take their ramen to go instead.]

Hope ya don't mind that I didn't clean up. Didn't exactly expect any visitors, to be honest.

I've been told it's an intimate bond and all that.

[ Knows it. Kon's seen his brother and his Guide at work, if Ri hadn't told him otherwise, Kon would've believed the two could read each others minds. As he takes his bottle with him while he stands, Kon wonders if being able to read Reno's mind would make this easier.

But then Reno might read his mind, and it would all fall apart. ]

Don't mind in the slightest.

[So has Reno, even though he can't quite feel it yet, nor does he know what exactly it means in its entirety, he still didn't think that this is meant when they describe it as "intimate".
However, Kon is attractive and fascinating, so why not?

He pays their order and picks it up, turning around towards his partner.]

Ready to go?
It's... A bit of a walk, food might be cold by then, but ya said walking doesn't bother you?

[ It's a similar fascination that fuels Kon. Reno puts on an air of cocky aloofness, he wants to find out how much of it is real and how much is simply a mask the other man wears. Not to mention, it's rare he gets to enjoy a night with someone from Midgar. ]

I am and yeah, walking doesn't bother me. [ He leans in with a playful smirk. ] Unless you wanna carry me like some knight in shining armor~

((yup))

Oh honey, if ya lookin' for a knight, ya came to the wrong guy, I'm afraid,

[Reno winks and pushes out of the door if the restaurant, at least holding the door open with his foot to let Kon through after him.

Roughly half an hour and many innuendos and not so subtle bickering later, Reno pushes the door to his apartment open instead, revealing one of the definitely nicer apartments in Midgar. The Turks do pay well after all, and Shinra makes sure that they do have nice places.
Everything is the standard issued Shinra interior, though spacious and of good quality, with a huge TV in the living room and lots of luxuries that a lot of the regular Midgar inhabitants would be missing.
However, there's also little personal things to discover, piles of scattered clothes and empty takeout containers the only sign that anyone even lives in this place.]

Welcome to my quarters. Feel like home or whatever.
Want a drink or get right to it, hm?

[ The apartment had something itching inside of Kon. A multibillion gil company can ensure its employees live in the lap of luxury, but it can't spare even a single one to give the homeless somewhere to go?

He focuses his mind on taking off his jacket, lest the anger ruin his mood. His heels are already off, set down in the entrance. ]

No drinks, I prefer having my head on straight.

[ Kon's fingers grasp the edge of his beanie. Back home, it was easy to hide the points of his ears. Most neighbors knew the truth, the rare hookup with a traveler was done in the dark or with clothes pulled aside just enough. Not to mention his people were known for body modification.

Still, he gulps, slightly nervous. ]

C-Can I keep the hat on for a bit?

[The overall vibe of the place feels more like a better quality standardized hotel room, rather than an actual living place for a person, with the shine alogo edged into almost every piece of furniture when looking closely. Reminding everyone who they (the place AND the person living in it) actually belong to.
But that's also what happens when you barely spend any time at home and most of it at work or at your best buddies' place for beers and pizza or something actually freshly cooked. Reno would never.]

Not completely straight, I'd say, or we wouldn't be here right now,

[He smirks, unable to let a tease just pass by. He puts the ramen containers on the living room table, a few older boxes having already gathered there, but at least they are all empty, and it's not like anything smells bad. It's just been almost a week since this place hit last cleaned properly.]

The hat? Huh. Sure, I mean, whatever's your thing,

Reno shrugs. He also keeps his goggles on most of the time, but that's more because taking them off always ends in awkward hassles that are simply not worth it.]
