better hope things turn around quick!
![]() NEAR MISS/CLOSE CALL MEME Whether it's hiding in a kitchen from some raptors or turning the corner too fast to see a crush walking by, the point is that whatever was going to happen, whether good or bad, only barely didn't happen. All the other details are up to you. |

and after this? when things are back to normal and jim has his footing under him again? he's going to act like this conversation never happened, like he never had this outburst, that spock never saw him at his weakest.
right now though, he leans into the press of their foreheads and lifts his hand to grip at spock's nape, too gentle for the viciousness he'd just been showing but possessive all the same.
he breathes in. breathes out. huffs out a sound that's almost a laugh. ]
Yeah, if you croak I'm Captain until one of those assholes manages to kill me, so it's best for the crew if you stick around.
[ but now he's close, too fucking close, and he sits up all at once, actually dislodging spock's hand this time, and sets about wrapping the wound that's still only barely bleeding now that jim's stopped digging around in it. ]

Spock does not pull away.
It is only Kirk's abrupt movement that parts them. Spock offers his arm without complaint, allowing Kirk to wrap it. He is still himself, and so long as he is, he will keep his word and allow Kirk to try to save him. ]
It would be illogical to allow you to ever fully take command of the Enterprise.
[ Illogical in far too many ways. Unlike Kirk, Spock has not made an effort to hide all of them from himself. He is starkly aware of his own feelings towards this man and the ways in which they defer from his feelings for Jim. He is not stupid enough to make the mistake of ever thinking they are the same. ]
I presume you will be remanding me to Doctors McCoy's care upon our return to the ship. Based upon preliminary findings, it should theoretically be possible to synthesize a compound that further slows the spread of the fungal infection. This compound may also serve as the basis for one that will eradicate the infection. I do not have the means to test and modify the compound at this time. The data the doctors will require is on my tricorder.
[ This is his capitulation: he will allow Kirk to save him, and he will even aid in the preservation of his life. ]

[ jim gets spock's arm all set up and then releases him with a nod. not satisfied, but resigned for now. he's not going to stop watching spock, and if anything happens on the trip between here and back to the ship, well... that's what knocking him the fuck out is for. one problem solved on the way to solving the big one.
however, spock is providing his assessment of the situation, and he follows every single word like a ravenous dog, catalogs all that spock is saying and everything he isn't. he'll relay it to bones and mccoy once they're onboard; the doctors will be able to handle it. jim's been brought back from the dead more than once. this'll be easy in comparison with spock actually willingly giving up the information they need.
he nods and it's sharp, but then he exhales and stands as the comms start to crackle to life again. eta 10 minutes.
he claps a hand on spock's shoulder, squeezing, grip a little too tight. ]
Any thoughts on how far into the process it's possible to bring someone back? I know there's no way to tell for sure without trying. Ballpark figure.
[ is he going to want to try and save the poor fucks left here on planet, once he's cured? ]

Spock tilts his head up to give Kirk a narrow-eyed glare, but for once, he does not brush the too-tight grip away. ]
For a typical human, I estimate any attempt at an anti-fungal must be administered within less than an hour of the initial introduction of the infection to their system. [ Within an hour, the infection will have spread so thoroughly through the nervous system that it is unlikely that function will remain without it. ] However, that is without any kind of possible regeneration taken into account. As he is more knowledgeable in this field, Doctor McCoy may be able to engineer a more positive prognosis.
[ McCoy the sane one, who actually cares about saving lives.
The answer, of course, is yes, if it's possible. Possible, however, is currently not yet determined. ]

and for what?
he does pay attention to spock's assessment, nodding slightly. it makes sense, tracks with the vague thoughts he'd already had on the matter. ] I'm sure he'll take a good long look once the main problem's taken care of.
[ the main problem, fixing spock.
finally, he lets go and gives spock a solid once-over, just making sure he looks presentable despite, you know, the blood. which, frankly, there's still not much of. fucked up. ]
Good to go, Captain?
[ back to normal. they're going back to the rest of the crew. even if 'normal' is how there's that sharp edge to the rank because frankly, who gives a fuck about rank anymore? not jim. ]

Spock dips a glance down at his arm, then nods. Despite the odd numbness that is no doubt the fungal infection continuing to spread, he feels, for the moment, no worse than he has on any other equally disastrous away mission.
(He would not have revealed his emotional turmoil to Jim; revealing it to Kirk is out of the question.) ]
I am adequate. [ Back to normal. ] As I will be focusing on re-establishing communications with the ship, I leave the crew in your hands.
[ In case the infection affects my judgment, he doesn't say, you are essentially in command. ]
