For all that his physiology has slowed the growth of the parasite, it is undeniably growing. He is not a mindless thrall to the fungus yet, but it is still only a matter of time. Long enough, he hopes, that he will be able to see the remainder of the Away Team to the ship and find some way to convince Kirk that he should not destroy this universe even if Spock is no longer in it.
